As our Head Coach (and the boss) Jon is a prime example of the way surfing can change your life – for the better! After learning to surf, Jon moved to Devon. He is now considered one of the UK’s most experienced surf coaches and holds the highest qualifications available. He is qualified to instruct any level of surfer from beginner to British Team members and regularly trains and examines surf coaches for the British Surfing Association. Jon is also qualified in many areas of surfing including sports nutrition, injury prevention, competition tactics and national team management – so he’s the man to talk to when it starts to get serious. He has also lectured on sports psychology to other surf coaches and works with autistic and special needs children to introduce them to the world of surfing.
As a true surfing professional Jon loves surfing – but loves teaching more!
“The joy I get from watching someone succeed and improve is immense whether it’s a beginner standing up for the first time or one of our advanced students pulling off a radical manoeuvre.”

Since getting the bug on holiday in Bude ten years ago, Hutch has devoted his life to living and loving the coastal life. Once a county champion pole vaulter, Hutch has great natural ability and surfs whenever and wherever he can. When he’s not, he still finds the time to ski, kayak and rock climb.
This enthusiasm is what makes him a great teacher. He holds British Surfing Association Level 2 Coaching qualification and has been teaching in Bude since 2005.
“For me the best thing about surf coaching is seeing our students come out of the water happy, with massive smiles on their faces.”

Heidi has always been obsessed with water. She spent most of her childhood in the paddling pool and then as she got older the local swimming pool.
“When I was asked what I wanted to do when I was older I would say I wanted to be a mermaid” says Heidi.
When she moved down to Cornwall to work in an outdoor centre at 17 she tried surfing and was hooked! This has lead to her surfing in Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, although she’s still not a Mermaid!

A Sport Science degree graduate, Rob captained the
University surf team. He joins our team this year; "I'm eager to
spend to time helping others have fun in the
water, as I've been lucky enough to do in the past in the UK,
Portugal and South Africa, where I helped run a surfing program for
street kids."
Stemming from a love of the beach, the ocean and board sports, Rob is passionate about surfing which is reflected in his teaching.

Matt has always enjoyed the out doors and graduated from Bangor University with an Outdoor Sports Science degree. Over the 3 years in North Wales, Matt learnt to surf and spent every free moment in the water, even becoming the Vice Captain of the Uni surf club! Now as a qualified surf coach, he's looking to help others get in to such a great sport!
Matt's love for surfing is only second to coaching. As a qualified ski instructor who also has 5 years experience as a tennis coach, Matt is a born coach. "I'm loving using my skills to turn novices into surfers!"

British Sign Language Level 2 Signer
Described by her British Surfing Association Trainer assessor as offering “some of the best teaching I’ve ever seen”, Becky is one of just a few female surf coaches. She is a competent surfer and has a deep knowledge of many sports and sports related training. She is an ex member of the British Fencing Squad as well as a keen snowboarder, tennis player and netball player. Oh, and she’s fluent in French, Italian and Sign Language too!
“It’s great to see the buzz a student gets when they stand up for the very first time. Sharing a passion for sport and the outdoors is a privilege.”

Although I’ve lived by the sea for most of my life, I hadn’t tried surfing until I started working for Big Blue in 2010.
(Jon & Becky insist that office staff have lessons so they can tell new customers what to expect).
Now I’d recommend it to everyone. It really is the most fun!
I’ve been sporty since early child hood, I play a lot of women’s football and have a love for horses, so surfing fits right in there; it’s a great way to keep fit whilst having a great time.
