Lessons for disabled surfers
The experience of surfing can have an incredible effect on the lives of those who try it. We believe surfing should be available to everybody. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Surf Relief to offer any young person aged under 25yrs with a recognised disability
subsidised one to one surf sessions.
Depending on the individual’s needs and abilities, we can offer anything from a ‘learn to surf’ session to a tandem wave riding experience. We have experience of working with young people with all types of needs including autism, Asperger’s syndrome and Down’s syndrome. We can cater for groups, schools or individuals.
One to one sessions include all equipment and are just £30 per session off peak and £60 peak (school holidays, weekends and bank holidays). For more information please contact us.
We were the first surf school in the UK to offer signed surf lessons for deaf students and have been doing so for the last four years. Our BSL signed lessons are with Level 2 signer, British Surfing Association surf coach and beach lifeguard Becky Price, assisted by other coaches from our team. We work on a ratio of four students per coach and provide all equipment. We can cater for groups, schools or individuals. Get in touch via our enquiry form for more information.
You were amazing with the children and all achieved far more than any of us could have imagined. They were all exausted on the journey home, including the helpers!! I am sure that when the word gets around about how fab it went, we will have lots of other children wanting to take up this wonderful opportunity next year! One parent rang me to say her son had been having a terrible time, constantly having ticks etc but since returning on Sunday was a different lad- that really does make it so worth while.
One of the group said how much he enjoyed it all. His support worker commented, 'I don't know what you did down there but you have changed.' I believe that he has found an inner strength he never thought he had and that he can do whatever he sets his mind on - with the right support.

Big Blue Surf School held a Breaking the Barrier day this Autumn. Tens of disabled, deaf and autistic children and their siblings had the opportunity to experience surfing. The weather was in our favour and the day was a great success. Many waves were ridden and many smiles were photographed and videoed. Full write up here soon... Thanks to Hutch, Lou, JS, Charlie, Jon and Ander for making the day run so smoothly. Thanks to Life's a Beach for the much needed sandwiches and drinks. Lifeworks, Surfable and Big Blue will be doing it all again next year, we'll keep you posted!
