Bude is a small Victorian seaside resort on the North Cornwall/North Devon border. It is friendly and unspoilt with a lovely, laid-back atmosphere. It’s a lovely place to spend your holidays in the South West – and a great place for surfing lessons. Inextricably linked with seafaring, Bude was once home to ship wreckers and a large fishing fleet. Today the town has become famous for surfing and fabulous beaches.
There are safe beach breaks, rocky points and secret reefs in the Bude area and it is this variety that makes it such a brilliant surfing destination – there really is something for everybody. The water is clean, water temperatures are relatively high, (thanks to the Gulf Stream), and the surf is consistent.
Surfing is well and truly embedded in the soul of Bude. Surf shops selling boards wetsuits, accessories and hip surf clothing are everywhere and there are plenty of great places to dip into the après surf scene – either for a bite to eat or a beer or two. Add that to a great teaching experience at Big Blue Surf School and you’ve got all the ingredients of a brilliant surfari!
At Big Blue Surf School we don’t like to restrict ourselves, or our customers, to just one surf beach. On any day the conditions can vary enormously so we remain flexible. All beaches used for teaching have lifeguard cover from May to September. Between them they offer good quality waves, for all levels of surfer, in almost any conditions.

One of the few spots along the North Devon and North Cornwall coast that’s protected from prevailing South Westerly winds, Summerleaze provides shelter in large swells. Even on days when gales are blowing, beginners can surf small, clean, waves in safe conditions in the harbour. Summerleaze also offers some great conditions at mid to low tide when it picks up almost any swell hitting the north coast. There can often be a surfable wave here when everywhere else is flat.
Middle BeachAt mid to low tide Middle Beach provides ideal conditions for teaching. Its gently sloping sand banks offer slow, spilling and uncrowded waves that are perfect for beginner to intermediate surfers. However, at mid to high tide, the surf breaks over a mixture of sand and rock and is usually fast and hollow – ideal for more experienced surfers who want to hit the lip or get barrelled.

Described by some visiting Australian surfers as the ‘Bondi of Britain’, Crooklets is popular amongst local surfers and is home to the Bude Surf Life Saving Club. It offers some fast but fun waves at low tide and provides great mid to high tide conditions in small swells. Crooklets is a Blue Flag Beach.
We like to concentrate on providing specialist surf teaching so we can only offer limited options when it comes to surfing and accommodation packages. We do not provide an accommodation booking service – so please don’t ask us to book it for you. However, Bude has plenty of options, from camping to boutique hotels. So please remember to mention us when you book.
